Follow the steps of Jean-Michel Basquiat, graffiti innovator and noise music artist, through 1980's Lower Manhattan in Edo Bertoglio's cult classic film. Shot in 1980-81 but only released in 2000, the film features cameos by Debbie Harry and Fab Five Freddy plus musical performances by DNA, James White and the Blacks, Lydia Lunch, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, and more. Introduction by New York-based artist, writer, filmmaker, and musician Michael Holman and MCNY curator Sean Corcoran.
This edition of Moonlight & Movies accompanies our hit exhibition, New York, New Music: 1980-1986 (closing September 18).
Event Timeline:
6:00 pm - Happy Hour with djFRiTZo on the South Terrace; drinks & snacks available for purchase. New York, New Music open for viewing (3rd Floor)
7:00 pm - Introduction by Michael Holman and Sean Corcoran
7:20 pm - Screening of Downtown 81 (75 mins)
8:35 pm - Film ends, Museum closes.
About Michael Holman:
Michael Holman is a musician, writer, painter, theater producer and filmmaker who created the historic breakdance crew, The New York City Breakers. He created and hosted the first nationally broadcast Hip-Hop TV show, Graffiti Rock, and co-founded the noise/art band “Gray” with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. A New York resident since 1978, Holman has been a creative and cultural force within, as well as an ambassador for, this great city for over four decades.
