Native New York: American Indians and Dutch New Amsterdam

Course Description

Co-led by the Museum of the City of New York and the National Museum of the American Indian-New York, this popular course examines trade and relations between the Lenape and the Dutch and life on Mannahatta and in the Hudson River region.

Through guided workshops, lectures, and walking tours, explore source material in the two cultural institutions, learn about the relationships between the Lenape and the Dutch, and compare and contrast the natural landscape and ecology of Mannahatta in 1609 to the island of Manhattan today.

Featuring guest speakers Perry Ground, Turtle Clan (Onondaga Nation), Education Specialist and Storyteller, and Dr. Andrew Lipman, Assistant Professor of History, Barnard College and author of The Saltwater Frontier: Indians and the Contest for the American Coast.

This two-day course meets on Saturday, September 29, 2018, from NEW TIME 9:30 am–4:30 pm at the National Museum of the American Indian-New York (1 Bowling Green, New York, NY), and on Sunday, September 30, 2018, from 9:00 am–4:00 pm at the Museum of the City of New York (1220 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY).

The Museum of the City of New York is CTLE certified. Participation in each day of this program provides 6 hours of CTLE credit, for a total of 12 hours. Eligible participants who register with ASPDP and complete the course requirements also receive 1 P Credit.

Registration

Registration for Native New York: American Indians and Dutch New Amsterdam is a two-step process for those taking the course for P Credit. Educators interested in taking this course not for P Credit are welcome to do so and only need to complete Step 1. All teachers receive CTLE credit for the course hours.

Step 2: Register for the course on the ASPDP Course Catalog here and pay the NYC DOE ASPDP course fee of $45.

About P Credit Courses

The Museum of the City of New York offers Professional Credit (P Credit) Courses throughout the year. These courses are open to all educators, including educators not eligible for credits through the New York City Department of Education.

P Credit in-service courses are offered in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education’s After School Professional Development Program (ASPDP) and can be applied towards teachers' 30+ salary differential. For more information on DOE salary differentials, please visit their website.

The Museum of the City of New York is a CTLE certified provider. ASPDP courses may also be used by eligible educators toward the NYS 100 hours of Continuing Teacher and Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) requirement. This course provides 12 CTLE hours.
