New York at Its Core Seminar Day: Rhythm & Power 

When was the last time – or the first time? – a professional development event began with a one-of-a-kind Broadway performance created just for New York City educators? On this special one-day-only event, learn the history of the city by embracing its many beats, from salsa to Sondheim. Bring literacy, science, geography, and history into your classroom via gallery tours and music, dance, and art workshops.

This free Seminar Day for educators will explore the theme of Rhythm & Power in conjunction with New York at Its Core, the first exhibition to present the compelling story of New York’s rise from a striving Dutch village to today’s “Capital of the World,” a preeminent global city now facing the future in a changing world.

• 9:00 am - Welcome and Overview of the Day
• 9:30 am - Keynote Talk: "Teaching Science through Hip Hop" with Dr. Christopher Emdin
• 10:45 am - Guided Gallery Tours: Rhythm and Power in New York at Its Core
• 11:30 am - Lunch
• 12:30 pm - “From Hammerstein to Hamilton: New York History on Stage and in Your Classroom” - Broadway singers perform an original medley pairing musical numbers with historical context
• 1:45 pm - Preregistered Workshops: “The Drama of History – Reading, Writing, and Performing in your Classroom"; “Salsa: Step to the City’s Beat”; “20th Century African American Design: Ruby Bailey”
• 3:00 pm - Day concludes
