In this special installment of the Museum of the City of New York’s Only In New York series presented in association with SummerStage, New York Times journalist Sarah Maslin Nir sits down with veteran performer Shannon O’Neill, now artistic director of The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York, and Aparna Nancherla, up-and-coming standup comedian and actress, to talk about breaking in and making it in the New York City comedy scene.

Following the conversation, performers from The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater will improvise alongside Saturday Night Live cast member Sasheer Zamata.

About the Speakers:
Aparna Nancherla is a New York-based standup comedian. Last year, she released her debut album, Just Putting It Out There, and recorded a half hour special for Comedy Central. Currently, you can see her on HBO’s Crashing, and the new seasons of both Master of None and Love. She also popped up on the most recent season of Inside Amy Schumer. Nancherla was named one of “The 50 Funniest People Right Now” by Rolling Stone, as well as one of the “25 Best Comedians of 2016” by Paste Magazine.

Shannon O'Neill is the artistic director of The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York. She can be seen every Friday night performing with The Stepfathers, and every Sunday night hosting and performing in UCBT's longest running show, ASSSSCAT 3000. She is the sidekick on The Chris Gethard Show on TruTV and has appeared on Neon Joe Werewolf Hunter, Broad City, Man Seeking Woman, The Characters, Debate Wars, Thanksgiving and the feature film Women Who Kill.

Sarah Maslin Nir is a native New Yorker and a reporter for The New York Times best known for her report on the working conditions of nail salon workers, for which she was a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize. A graduate of the Brearley School, Columbia University, and the Columbia University School of Journalism, where she received her master’s, she was also The New York Times' nightlife correspondent, covering 252 parties in 18 months. She once had an audience with the Queen of Spain, though she failed to realize it at the time.
