Tin Pan Alley Hits of the '20s

In celebration of MCNY's 100th birthday, join us for a performance of popular 1920s tunes by cabaret star Aisha de Haas (voice) and musical director Robert Lamont (piano). The concert will spotlight stories about the songwriters who were part of the cultural movement that emerged from Tin Pan Alley on 28th Street and spread to stages, bandstands and parlors worldwide.  Presented in partnership with the Tin Pan Alley American Popular Music Project.

Tin Pan Alley blossomed into what we now call the American Songbook during the years surrounding the founding of the Museum of the City of New York. By that year (1923),  now familiar names like Jerome Kern & Irving Berlin, Sissle & Blake, James P. Johnson & Cecil Mack, Vincent Youmans and the Gershwins all had major hit songs that were defining the sound and values of an America that would make the 1920s roar.  Lamont and de Haas will perform ten musical gems from the years around Henry Collin’s founding of the Museum, from 1920 to 1925, to celebrate this major birthday.

About the Artists:

Aisha de Haas is a versatile actor and singer with Broadway, television and film credits. Graduating from Columbia College Chicago, Aisha’s professional career began with Little Shop of Horrors at the Royal George Theater, Four Saints In Three Acts with Chicago Opera Theater and several productions at The Goodman Theater. She returned to New York, where she was cast in her first Broadway show, Bring In Da Noise, Bring In Da Funk with Savion Glover. This was followed by the Tony Award Winning production of RENT and Caroline, Or Change. She toured North America as Medda Larkin in the 1st National Tour of Disney’s Newsies and is featured in the movie released in 2017. Off-Broadway, Ms. de Haas was in Nora Ephron's Love, Loss and What I Wore, Stephen Sondheim's Road Show and the world premier of SUFFS at The Public Theater. Television: Madam Secretary, Shades of Blue, Blue Bloods, Law & Order and The Today Show. Film: Across The Universe, RENT, The Secret Lives Of Dentists and Marci X. Aisha has a Bistro Award for outstanding Jazz Vocalist and has enjoyed several appearances   with symphonies and music festivals around the country.

Robert Lamont is a musical director, composer and educator. He has worked on and off Broadway with such artists as Carol Burnett, Jerry Orbach, Marc Anthony and Duncan Sheik. Vincent Canby in The New York Times once wrote “Robert Lamont is worth his own paragraph.” As an entertainer, he has played all over the world. Also a veteran music teacher, Robert was the Music Curriculum Development Co-Chair for the New York City Department of Education’s current Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Music. He is currently creating a songwriting curriculum for New York City’s 1100 public schools. Joining the TPA team in 2017, he is also a Board Member of the Tin Pan Alley American Popular Music Project and serves as its Education Committee Chair.
