What sounds make up New York City? How have New Yorkers captured these sounds to create, communicate, and celebrate with their communities? Come and discover New York City’s soundscape both past and present at this month’s NYC Discovery Lab.

Saturdays and Sundays, 11am–4pm

  • Learn about New York City’s soundscape through a matching activity that explores the different calls of street vendors from 200 years ago.
  • Test your knowledge of today’s city soundscape with a sound quiz and scavenger hunt related to our centennial exhibition, This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture.
  • Explore how New Yorkers used musical instruments, such as the Güira and Pullero from the Dominican Republic, to communicate and celebrate with their communities.
  • Create your own instrument and try to capture the experience of riding the subway by playing along with jazz musician Duke Ellington’s music.
