Native New York: American Indians and Dutch New Amsterdam

Our popular Native New York course for educators is once again available online—and free! Explore the history and legacies of early New York through guided workshops, lectures with thought-provoking guest speakers, and primary source analysis. Learn about the cultural, economic, and political relationships between the Lenape and the Dutch in the 16th and 17th centuries and uncover the lasting legacies these interactions have had on our city today. 

Thanks to the support of the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York, we are able to waive registration fees for Native New York. If participants wish to take the course for P Credit, they must still pay ASPDP’s course fee. Registration is required, seats are limited. 

The Museum of the City of New York is a CTLE certified provider. Participation in this program provides 15 hours of CTLE credit and 1 P Credit. Native New York is an online course presented by the Museum of the City of New York in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian—New York.

Course Overview

In this multi-session, virtual course for educators, participants will investigate trade relationships and power dynamics between the Lenape and Dutch communities in New Amsterdam, examine documents, maps, and artifacts that speak to interactions between Native American nations and early European colonists in the Hudson River region in the 16th and 17th centuries, and consider how the natural environment affected the cultural, economic, and political experiences of those who resided there.

Course Calendar & Details

Native New York will run in October 2022. The course includes both synchronous sessions and asynchronous coursework. Synchronous sessions will be held via Zoom, dates and times below. Final dates and times are subject to change pending speaker availability; all changes will be confirmed and communicated with course registrants in advance. 

*Optional in-person Educators' Open House for P-Credit teachers at the National Museum of the American Indian on Monday, October 10th. More details are to be provided at the start of the course. An alternative for this hour can be provided for educators unable to attend.

Registration 

Registration for Native New York is a two-step process for those taking the course for P Credit. (Educators interested in taking this course not for P Credit are welcome to do so and only need to complete Step 1.) All eligible educators receive CTLE credit for the course hours.  

Step 1: Register for Native New York using the blue "Register" button at the top of this page.  

Step 2:  Educators may register and pay the NYC DOE ASPDP course fee of $45. Registration for this course through ASPDP closes on October 2, 2022.

Participant Policies 

The Museum of the City of New York ("the Museum") offers refunds for its educational partner fee for P Credit courses if a participant requests to withdraw from their registered course at least three (3) business days in advance of the registration deadline for that course. 

Participants must contact ASPDP to receive a refund for the ASPDP course fee. To view the policy for ASPDP course fee refunds, please click here. 

If a participant must withdraw from a Museum P Credit course after the first day of the course, the Museum offers participants the value of the course as a credit for future MCNY education programming.
