Past Event: Moonlight & Movies | The Wiz
This event has passed.
Join us for a screening of The Wiz (1978), director Sidney Lumet's spectacular version of the hit 1974 Broadway musical featuring an all-star Black cast and based loosely on L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Set in a dreamscape version of New York City, the film stars Diana Ross as Dorothy (reimagined as a Harlem schoolteacher), a 20-year old Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, and other major stars including Nipsey Russell, Lena Horne, Richard Pryor, Mabel King and Ted Ross. With the World Trade Center standing in for Emerald City, costumes by Halston and Stephen Burrows, and music by Charlie Smalls and Luther Vandross (supervised by Quincy Jones), this now cult-status NYC movie is an unbeatable big-screen experience.
Part of our monthly Moonlight & Movies series, The Wiz will be introduced by veteran NYC film curator and producer Jessica Green.
