Celebrate NYC's quintessential summer sport -- pick-up basketball -- with Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau, the directors of Doin' It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, New York City (2012, 83 minutes).  The two will sit down with former overseas professional and streetball player Milani Malik, for a virtual conversation about the making of Doin' It In The Park and the city's one-of-a-kind pick-up b-ball scene. 

About the Film:
Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, New York City is an independent documentary directed by Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau. The film explores the history, culture, and social impact of the summer b-ball scene in NYC, the worldwide “Mecca” of the sport.

About the Speakers:
Bobbito Garcia is a native New Yorker and the critically acclaimed author of Where’d You Get Those? NYC’s Sneaker Culture: 1960-1987 (Testify Books). He was a special consultant for the Museum of the City of New York's exhibition City/Game: Basketball in New York and contributor to the exhibition's companion book. The former NY Knicks/MSG Network halftime reporter was the voice of EA Sports’ popular NBA Street video game and TV host of ESPN2’s “It’s the Shoes” series. Currently, he produces his Full Court 21 Tournament in 30 international cities.  A self-proclaimed “outdoor b-ball activist,” Garcia has played in 48 countries throughout six continents, and has acted as an ambassador for the sport, giving clinics and donating sneakers in multiple developing areas.

Kevin Couliau articulates the beauty of basketball through photographs that express the nature, aesthetic and culture of the sport. Inspired by an early love for the game, the Paris-based photographer and filmmaker searches for stories that reveal basketball's impact on individuals and their communities, while demonstrating its universality throughout the world. Couliau's acute awareness of sociology, urban design and architecture converge into the composition and content of his photographs, and in 2012 culminated into the award-winning documentary Doin' It In the Park. Couliau publishes an independent magazine Asphalt Chronicles that distills topics and aesthetics of pick-up basketball culture. In addition he works on assignments globally for commercial clients including the NBA and Nike.

Milani Malik, "Born in Brooklyn. Raised on the court" (NikeNYC), played professional basketball in Israel, Germany, Trinidad, Montenegro, and France. She played for NYC Thunder in the Bronx as the only woman to play in the American Basketball Association (ABA) professionally. Malik is also a streetball player and has played and won chips at Rucker Park with the women's league and Uptown Challenge women's league, and is featured in Doin' It In The Park. She is also a sports and business professional skilled in event management, relationship building, event planning, youth mentoring, coaching, athletic training, entrepreneurship, and communication.
