Known today as “America’s poet,” Walt Whitman was entranced by the density, diversity, and disorder of New York in the mid-1800s. Discover the origins of this celebrated poet in the digital interactive in Port City, 1609-1898, and read Whitman’s poems celebrating the spirit of the city. Write your own poem inspired by the sounds, sights, and sensations of the city, and illustrate your words to bring the poem to life!
Family programs are free with Museum admission and for members, geared to families with children ages 6-12 years old, and include a snack. Activities are designed for adults and children to complete together.
