Partner Event: NYC—Ultimate Backdrop or Lead Character?
New York was, is, and will always be a film town. Inspired by the Museum’s Centennial 16-screen film immersive, You Are Here, MCNY is presenting a conversation with and for NYC’s Film and TV community, in concert with partners from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment; Eastern Effects; AbelCine; Lux Lighting; and RadicalMedia. The goal of the event is to bring together those who are the unsung heroes of the screen—the people behind the camera—Cinematographers, Directors of Photography, Gaffers, Grip and Electrics, Best Boys, Production Assistants, Location Managers, Line Producers, Makeup Artists and more. As NYC’s Film & TV industry has been through a very challenging time, MCNY would like to take the opportunity to celebrate those who have always been the backbone of the industry.
Join a conversation and screening with Kwame Amoaku, Deputy Film Commissioner, Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment; Paul Kramer, Location Manager; Teodoro Maniaci, Director of Photography; Xan Parker, Documentary producer and You Are Here producer; and Bob Shaw, Production Designer for The Gilded Age. Moderated by Jill Goldsmith, Deadline. With opening remarks by Pat Swinney Kaufman, Commissioner, Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment.
Discussion and reception in Ronay Menschel Hall, ground floor at 4pm.
Following, screen You Are Here on the third floor.
This event is invitation-only.
About You Are Here:
The Museum of the City of New York is celebrating its Centennial year as the first city museum in the U.S. As part of the exhibition, This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Arts and Pop Culture, MCNY collaborated with RadicalMedia to produce You Are Here. This 16-screen immersive film draws on the rich archive of movies set in New York, combining thousands of cinematic moments across the last century. Sources include Hollywood blockbusters, independent films, documentaries, and experimental works. By juxtaposing these multiple visions, the dazzling montages of You Are Here make connections and contrasts that allow movies to comment on each other and shed new light on the varied New Yorks of our collective imagination.
This event is sponsored by AbelCine, Eastern Effects, Lux Lighting, and RadicalMedia. Hosted by the Museum of the City of New York.
