NYC Discovery Lab – Roots and Rise

Join us this month at the NYC Discovery Lab we celebrate Black History Month! Learn about the stories of Black New Yorkers from musicians to Civil Rights leaders who left their mark on the city in February with drop-in activities for children ages 5-12 and their grownups! 

Dates: Every Saturday and Sunday in February   

Time: Drop-in anytime between 11am-4pm 

  • Learn about Seneca Village, a mostly African American community that once stood in Central Park through historical objects and artmaking
  • Explore the impact of musicians like Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo and create your own drum to take home
  • Learn about the Civil Rights movement in New York City and create a button for causes you care about
  • Grab a scavenger hunt and explore the stories and contributions of Black New Yorkers in the museum’s galleries
  • Play a matching card game exploring the different uses of native plants by Native American communities and enslaved people on their path to freedom

Museum Admission:
New York State Residents: Pay What You Can 
Children: Free for ages 18 and under
Adults $23/Seniors $18 & Students/$14 – please purchase a ticket online or pay-what-you-wish at the door on the day of your visit. No registration necessary.
