New York on Film: Rustin

When: Saturday, August 10, 2024, 4:00pm
Price: Free, registration recommended
Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin walks along the Washington Mall.
Still from "Rustin."

Join us for a screening of Rustin (2023, George C. Wolfe, 108 min) and a sneak preview of Lee Summers’ Bayard: The Musical. These two works both honor the life of New Yorker and gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. Rustin played a huge part in planning the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, but his socialism and homosexuality marginalized him within the leadership of the civil rights movement.

Summers will perform selections from his new musical and share about his process of writing a piece about one of his heroes and the responsibility of telling Rustin’s story onstage!

Please note: The film Rustin (2023, George C. Wolfe, 108 min) and Bayard: The Musical are entirely separate and unaffiliated works. Netflix, the distributor of Rustin, has no connection or involvement with the musical.
