Past Event: Cocktails & Culture | Fresh Latinx Flavors with Mafer Bandola

Join us for our first Cocktails & Culture event of the New Year! Enjoy the rhythms and sounds of Venezuelan Joropo music and more by acclaimed bandola performer, Mafer Bandola and her trio (Mafer, Pat Swoboda, and Andrés Fonseca); specialty Venezuelan Guarapita cocktails and mocktails; and delicious bites from our Empanada Mama pop-up café.   

All exhibitions will be open for late viewing.

About Mafer Bandola (María Fernanda González): 
Mafer is a bandola llanera performer, self-taught composer, community organizer, actor, and educator from Venezuela. With a grounded understanding of the bandola llanera (male-dominated) traditions, she focuses on bringing the instrument to a new artistic path through composition, performance, and improvisation. She is known as an innovator for her solo work and for her performances with LADAMA, a multinational band of four women from four countries, of which she is a co-founder and current member. As an educator, she has developed an open-sourced culturally-responsive curriculum in partnership with TeachRock for American students. In addition, she has taught at multiple universities as an artist in residences, such as Dartmouth College, George Mason University, Butler University, and Michigan University. Mafer, based in New York, has created and hosted “Pipiris Nights,” the first recurring, community-focused series of Venezuelan Joropo music and dance in town.
