The Museum of the City of New York provides a holistic lens on the city, an interface for understanding the complexity and creativity of New York. Through special exhibitions, we illuminate the past, which has shaped the city we live in, highlight key aspects of the present, which affect our daily lives, and consider the grand challenges for the city to remain strong in the future.
Our changing exhibitions are as varied as the city itself and explore the qualities that define New York: the diverse and changing population of the city; New York as a physical place defined by its geography, infrastructure, buildings, and streetscape; the tumultuous political and economic history of the city, the dynamic struggles over the future of the city by citizens engaged in a broad spectrum of social activism; and the vibrant arts and design life that has made New York the cultural capital of the nation.
