    Courses for Kids are multi-session afterschool and camp opportunities for elementary and middle school students. Join us to learn from the Museum’s renowned photography and costume collections and work under the direction of professional photographers and designers to create your own photograph or fashion design.  Learn more about our current offerings below

    I Spy New York 2.0 

    An Intermediate Digital Photography Class for Students Ages 8-12 

    Students will deepen their understanding of New York City history through close observation, field trips, and photographic exploration. Show your refined knowledge and skills in a student exhibition at the Museum with an opening reception on Wednesday, June 7 at 5:00 pm.

    DATES: 10 Sessions, Wednesdays, March 1 – May 24, 2017*

    TIME: 4:00 - 6:00 pm

    EXHIBITION OPENING RECEPTION: Wednesday, June 7, 5:00 pm


    Student activities include:

    • Learning the manual functions of the camera, including aperture and shutter speed
    • Making a photo using an analog method
    • Taking field trips to locations such as Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Center, and Central Park
    • Writing your own artist statement
    • Printing, matting, and framing a final photo for the student installation at the Museum
    • Meeting Museum professionals to learn about the behind-the-scenes workings of a Museum
    • Critique and activities with a guest photographer Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao


    *Due to school vacations, there is no class on March 22, 29, and April 12. Please note that students who have not taken the I Spy New York introductory course may register for I Spy NY 2.0.


    I Spy New York Camp: Capturing the City through the Camera

    A Digital Photography Camp for Students Ages 7–9 and 10–12 

    Learn from the Museum’s renowned photography collection and work under the direction of a professional photographer to photograph the major elements of the city, including its buildings, parks, and people. Take home a professional print of your best work to share with family and friends.

    SESSION 1 (7–9 years old): Monday–Friday, June 12–16, 2017
    SESSION 2 (10–12 years old): Monday–Friday, June 19–23, 2017

    TIME: 9:00 am–4:00 pm

    ENROLLMENT FEE: $600/week; $550/week for Museum members

    Student activities include:

    • Learning how to use a professional digital camera
    • Taking field trips to Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, and other iconic NYC sites
    • Making cyanotype prints outside
    • Gallery visits and scavenger hunts to look at photographs on view
    • Meeting Museum professionals to learn about the behind-the-scenes workings of a Museum
    • Critique and activities with a guest photographer
    • Editing and printing a final photo
