Sold alongside the book of the same name, the fashion and candy line consists of more than 40 coordinated items, including hoodies, tee-shirts, hats, caps, a selection of gift chocolates and more, the debut collection draws inspiration from iconic graffiti featured in the Museum’s ground-breaking exhibition “City as Canvas” about the birth of NYC street art.
More about City As Canvas
City as Canvas: Graffiti Art from the Martin Wong Collection explores the work of young graffiti “writers” in 1980s New York City through the works amassed by East Village artist and collector Martin Wong. Comprised of 150 works on canvas, sketchbooks, and photographs of graffiti writing long erased from subways and buildings, this compelling exhibition sparks conversation about the importance of street art today. This exhibition is a traveling exhibition and is currently and will be on view at Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, Tennessee from September 20, 2024 – January 13, 2025.

CITY AS CANVAS: NEW YORK CITY GRAFFITI
A visual account of the birth of graffiti and street art, showcasing as-yet-unseen works collected by preeminent artist Martin Wong. The book contains previously unpublished art by famous street artists such as Futura 2000, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Christopher "Daze" Ellis, LA II, Lady Pink, and Keith Haring, to name only a few. City as Canvas traces the origins of urban self-expression and the era of "outlaw" street art in New York, which primed the floodgates for graffiti art to spread worldwide.
