School Group Policies

Planning your trip

All groups should register a minimum of two weeks prior to their visit. Please note: In order to insure you can visit on the date of your choice, we suggest contacting us at least one month in advance. Fee waivers may be issued in cases of documented need. Fees for schools in Community School District 4 are waived through the Museum’s Good Neighbor Program. A $25 deposit must be received one week prior to the date of the visit. A confirmation letter will be sent as soon as a reservation is made. It should be returned with the deposit. The deposit will be refunded if cancellations are made at least 48 hours before the scheduled visit. Payment may be made by check or purchase order. Invoices will be issued upon request of the group leader.

Education programs take place between 10:00 and 11:30 am and 1:00 and 2:30 pm. Please arrive on time so your group can enjoy the full program.

Decorum

School groups use the staff entrance on 104th Street (between Madison and Fifth Avenues). Please inform the security desk that you are here for an education program. We will greet you and store your students’ book bags. We ask your cooperation in keeping children from chewing gum. Teachers must remain with their students for the duration of the trip. We encourage children to talk about the exhibition, but neither students nor chaperones are permitted to touch the items on display. Please remind your students that “school rules” usually apply to museums as well.

Lunch

There are no eating facilities at the Museum of the City of New York.
The Museum is across the street from Central Park, where children can picnic on the lawn or on the benches. There are several playgrounds in the park within a short walk of the Museum.

All groups are welcome in the Museum Shop. Due to space limitations, the Museum reserves the right to limit the number of guests in the shop at one time.

School programs at the Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children's Center are supported in part by grants from the Helen and Harry Brandt Fund and The Hearst Foundation, Inc.
