Basketball was born in a Springfield, Massachusetts, YMCA in 1891, but its real history and development are a New York story. Played on schoolyards and street corners, in gymnasiums and glittering professional arenas throughout the five boroughs, basketball reflects the cultural, social, economic, ethnic, and racial history of the cityCity/Game: Basketball in New York captures the excitement and evolution of this quintessentially urban game and the energy of the diverse New Yorkers who play it and love it. 

Original objects and ephemera showcased alongside photography, audio, and video—highlighting the connections between basketball, music, and fashion—will enable visitors to relive historic highs and lows and learn how New York and basketball have shaped each other.
