Joseph Wheeler Appleton. Model of the ship "Half Moon", ca. 1929. Museum of the City of New York, M34.63.

Some of the earliest forms of transportation in New York include canoes, ferries, and boats that traveled along the city’s rivers. Explore the exhibition New York at Its Core to learn about the challenges of water travel that New Yorkers have faced and consider solutions that helped improve transportation on our waterways. Use various materials to design and build a boat of your own, then test it to see if it floats!

Family programs are free with Museum admission and for members, geared to families with children ages 6-12 years old, and include a snack. Activities are designed for adults and children to complete together.
